Difference between mezcal and tequila
When we hear traditional Mexican drinks, one automatically thinks of the famous drink called Tequila, but what you should also keep in mind is that another famous drink highly sought after by people from other countries outside of Mexico is Mezcal. As we all know, mezcal is a drink that arises from the distillation of agaves from some specific regions of Mexico (Oaxaca, Durango, Guerrero, Puebla, Zacatecas), it is a very popular drink with foreign people due to its flavors, smells and good taste for trying something different.
Difference between mezcal and tequila
What is mezcal? What is tequila? What is the difference between mezcal and tequila? Among certain differences that we can find between tequila and mezcal is in the agave with which it is distilled, the type of agave that is used for tequila is the blue agave which is native to the areas of Guadalajara Jalisco, and for the mezcal (plant) there are different types of agaves such as: Mezcal agave espadin, agave tobala, agave cupreata, agave sierra negra, and this is a difference compared to tequila, because it has a denomination of origin very jealously protected by certifying bodies.
For Tequila we can find the CRT (Tequila Regulatory Council) and for Mezcal we can find the CRM (Mezcal Regulatory Council). Another of the great differences is the way in which the processes are carried out, for the cooking of mezcal it is carried out in a well oven, while for mezcal it is carried out in industrial ovens.
Another big difference is in the distillation of maguey (agave) where for mezcal it is necessary to have copper boilers or clay pots if it is for some type of ancestral process, while in the manufacture of Tequila, distillation is carried out in ovens industrial.
Among the flavors of mezcal we can find herbal notes, citrus flavors (orange, lemon), smells and smoky flavors. Another difference between mezcal and tequila is the state or region in which it is made, mezcal is usually made in the state of Oaxaca, while Tequila in the region called as the drink, «Tequila Jalisco».
